Dr. Dickert is assistant professor of medicine in the Division of Cardiology. He also holds a secondary appointment in the Department of Epidemiology at the Rollins School of Public Health and is on staff at the Atlanta VA Medical Center. Dr. Dickert is a board-certified cardiologist whose clinical work is primarily in cardiac critical care and echocardiography. He completed medical school at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and a PhD in health policy and bioethics and the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. He completed an internal medicine residency at Johns Hopkins and a cardiology fellowship at Emory. Dr. Dickert joined the faculty at Emory in 2012 as part of the Emory Clinical Cardiovascular Research Institute.

Dr. Whitson received his initial medical training at University of South Alabama College of Medicine, with his residency and fellowship completed at North Shore University Hospital and Long Island Jewish Medical Center, Hofstra Northwell School of Medicine. Dr. Whitson served as chief resident while at Hofstra Northwell School of Medicine. Following his fellowship, he joined the UAB faculty in as assistant professor. His research and clinical interests relate to critical care, ultrasonography, echocardiography, and resource management in critical illness. Dr. Whitson has published and presented work on paracentesis, intravenous vasoactive medication in the ICU, septic shock and acute care.

Nancy A. Collop, MD, was the 2011-012 president of the American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM), and is the director of the Emory Sleep Center in Atlanta, Ga. She holds a primary appointment in the Emory School of Medicine as professor of Medicine in the Division of Pulmonary, Allergy and Critical Care Medicine, as well as a secondary appointment as professor of Neurology.

 “Novel Biomarkers of Risk in Patients with Coronary Artery Disease”

Dr. Quyyumi is currently a tenured professor of medicine in the Division of Cardiology at Emory University School of Medicine and Director at Emory Clinical Cardiovascular Research Institute. He is board certified in Internal Medicine and Cardiology and is a Fellow of the Royal College of Medicine.

He graduated from Guy’s Hospital medical school in London, and after accomplishing part of his medicine and cardiology training in London, he completed his fellowship training at Massachusetts general Hospital, Harvard University in Boston and at the National Institutes of Health (NIH), Bethesda, MD. He was a senior investigator and director of the cardiac catheterization laboratory at the Cardiology Branch of the National Institutes of Health for several years before arriving at Emory.

His research focus over the last quarter century has been on clinical and translational research in vascular biology, progenitor cells and angiogenesis, biomarkers and cardiovascular genomics. He has performed seminal studies investigating mechanisms of myocardial ischemia including silent ischemia in the past. His current studies include comprehensive assessment of vascular endothelial function and arterial stiffness and thickness in patients with arteriosclerosis and its risk factors. Other studies investigate the role of genetic and environmental risks on vascular disease, and particularly in relation to health disparities. He is also conducting clinical trials with bone marrow derived stem cells and progenitors in cardiovascular disease. He has published over 360 manuscripts in peer-reviewed journals.

Dr. Reinaldo Rampolla is a pulmonologist in New Orleans, LA, and is affiliated with Ochsner Medical Center. He received his medical degree from University of Puerto Rico School of Medicine and has been in practice 17 years. He is one of 22 doctors at Ochsner Medical Center who specialize in pulmonology. He also speaks multiple languages, including Spanish.

Dr. Maisel graduated from the University of Michigan Medical School, received his internal medicine training at Michael Reese Hospital in Chicago, and completed a cardiology fellowship at the University of California, San Diego (UCSD). He is a professor of medicine at UCSD. He is the director of the Coronary Care Unit and Heart Failure Program at the VA San Diego Healthcare System in La Jolla, CA. Dr. Maisel is active on the faculty at UCSD where he has won numerous teaching awards. He just finished a 10-year stint as associate editor of the Journal of the American College Cardiology.

He is considered one of the world’s experts on cardiac biomarkers and has over 300 scientific publications. He has authored several ground-breaking publications that have paved the way for development of diagnostic tools for patients with congestive heart failure. In particular, he was the leading investigator on studies that brought the use of BNP into clinical practice.
